Social and Evolutionary Rationality

چکیده
We live in a social world. Most other animals do too. The social world affords many opportunities and challenges for decision making, from the benefi ts of collective cognition and cooperation to the costs of groupthink and cut-throat competition. Some social situations appear, at least at the moment, to be uniquely human. For instance, morality in humans has been studied for millennia, with dozens of viewpoints on what behavior is morally permissible. But do morally relevant situations always require special sophisticated decision-making processes, or can simple heuristics play a role in moral behavior?

Cheating in Markets: A Methodological Exploration
In the 1970s, experimental economics split from social psychology by embracing rational choice and equilibrium methods. Behavioral economics has recently narrowed the divide, to the dismay of some. The present paper argues that evolutionary dynamics provides a framework which unifies the best features of social psychology with equilibrium and rational choice. Ongoing research in cheating in mar...
متن کاملDeep Rationality: The Evolutionary Economics of Decision Making.
What is a "rational" decision? Economists traditionally viewed rationality as maximizing expected satisfaction. This view has been useful in modeling basic microeconomic concepts, but falls short in accounting for many everyday human decisions. It leaves unanswered why some things reliably make people more satisfied than others, and why people frequently act to make others happy at a cost to th...

متن کاملFROM THE ACADEMY: COLLOQUIUM INTRODUCTION In the light of evolution VIII: Darwinian thinking in the social sciences
Darwinian thinking in the social sciences was inaugurated by Darwin himself in The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex (8, 9). Despite various misappropriations of the Darwinian label, true Darwinian thinking continued in the social sciences. However, with the advent of evolutionary game theory (10) there has been an explosion of Darwinian analysis in the social sciences. And it has...
متن کاملFrom Teleology to Evolution Bridging the gap between rationality and adaptation in social explanation
This paper focuses on the uneasy alliance of rational choice and evolutionary explanations in modern economics. While direct evolutionary explanations of “optimality” rule out "purposeful" rational choice by assuming zerointelligence and pure rational choice explanations leave no room for "selective" adaptation the indirect evolutionary approach integrates both perspectives. Subsequently we go ...
متن کاملWilliam James’s psychological pragmatism: habit, belief and purposive human behaviour
Modern institutional economists look to pragmatism for: (1) an evolutionary philosophy of knowledge; and (2) a foundation of a theory of human nature. These two elements are combined in William James, who was both a philosopher of pragmatism and a pioneering experimental psychologist. The author shows first how William James added psychological depth to the pragmatic tradition as it was left by...
